Red Dot Series, mixed medium on varied substrates ©1998  In the studio the series included red dots made of netting on plastic sheeting. Someone, anonymous and unknowing, wrote this passage about the lack of meaning in simple shapes. "Yes, I'm a dot. Yes, I'm aware that I'm a big, red dot. No, I don't "mean" anything. Well, not really. But I'm sure you've read some sort of "deep, inner meaning" in my roundness. No, I don't want to know what it is." Red dots are not always just red dots. Can a red dot be art? My red dots mean something, and generated an opinion, which is what art should do. The Red Dot Series is rooted in truthful experience. Upon graduation, exhibition success was often measured by sales. Gallery sales are represented by red dots. A red dot expresses how the marketplace acknowledges a work of art. I created this series to confront the notion in order to get over the distraction of it. By amassing a ton of red dots I was able to surrender the notion entirely.
